10 Free Things to Do in Orlando This October 2026

10 Free Things to Do in Orlando This October 2026: Festivals, Halloween and Family Fun

October is one of the best months to get out around Central Florida without spending theme park money. From free admission at Leu Gardens and Latino festivals to Halloween projections, fall celebrations, craft fairs, pet events and family trick-or-treating, here are 10 genuinely free things to put on your calendar.

October may be the month when Central Florida finally starts pretending it is fall.

The pumpkins come out.

Halloween decorations go up.

Outdoor festivals return.

And eventually, if we are lucky, the temperature drops enough that walking around outside for several hours becomes enjoyable again.

For Orlando families, couples and anyone trying to keep entertainment costs under control, there is another piece of good news:

A surprising number of October events around Greater Orlando are completely free to enter.

That does not necessarily mean you will spend nothing. Food trucks, restaurants, shopping and optional activities can still cost money.

But you do not have to spend $40, $60 or $100 just to get the family through the gate.

Here are 10 of our favorite free things happening around Orlando and Central Florida in October 2026.

1. Explore Leu Gardens for Free, October 5

Leu Gardens

We will start right in Orlando.

Harry P. Leu Gardens is offering free admission all day Monday, October 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

That is a meaningful savings considering regular admission is normally charged for adults and children.

October is also a particularly good time to visit because Leu Gardens has begun its Fall Into the Gardens seasonal displays. The 50-acre garden is decorated for autumn, giving residents a chance to enjoy some fall atmosphere without driving to a farm or buying a pumpkin festival ticket.

Families with younger children get an extra bonus. The Orange County Library System is providing free story times that morning for babies, toddlers and preschoolers.

When: Monday, Oct. 5, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Harry P. Leu Gardens, 1920 N. Forest Ave., Orlando
Cost: FREE

This would be our pick for anyone who can take advantage of a weekday outing.

2. Celebrate Orlando’s Latino Community at Luminary Green, October 10

The 4th Annual Orlando Latino Fest comes to Luminary Green on Saturday, October 10, from 2 to 8 p.m.

Admission is free.

The festival is part of the region’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations and brings together live bands, dance performances, cultural displays, food trucks and local vendors.

Luminary Green is a good venue for this because you can also explore Creative Village while you are there.

Food obviously costs extra, but you can walk in, enjoy the music and performances and spend only what you choose.

When: Saturday, Oct. 10, 2 to 8 p.m.
Where: Luminary Green, downtown Orlando
Cost: FREE

3. Spend Sunday at Viva Osceola in Kissimmee, October 11

Kissimmee Lake Front

The following day gives us another major Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.

Viva Osceola 2026 takes over Kissimmee Lakefront Park on Sunday, October 11, from 1 to 7 p.m.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The festival celebrates the cultures represented throughout Central Florida’s Hispanic community, making it a particularly good option for music, food and an afternoon at the lakefront.

And because you are already in downtown Kissimmee, you can easily turn it into a larger outing.

Walk the lake.

Explore downtown.

Visit the festival.

Grab something to eat.

It is one of the better free cultural events of the month.

When: Sunday, Oct. 11, 1 to 7 p.m.
Where: Kissimmee Lakefront Park
Cost: FREE

4. Watch Winter Garden City Hall Become a Halloween Show

Winter Garden has one of the simplest and best free Halloween activities in Greater Orlando.

The city’s Halloween Light Shows on City Hall return for six nights:

October 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31.

Shows run continuously from 7 to 9 p.m. and are completely free.

Ghosts, witches and other Halloween characters are projected across the front of City Hall while the display is synchronized with spooky music.

The city describes the show as family friendly, so this works especially well for younger children who may not be ready for haunted houses.

Our suggestion:

Arrive early.

Walk Plant Street.

Have dinner or dessert if you want.

Then finish the evening with the light show.

When: Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31, 7 to 9 p.m.
Where: Winter Garden City Hall, 300 W. Plant St.
Cost: FREE

5. Go to a Halloweentown Movie Night in Avalon Park, October 17

Avalon Park Halloween

East Orlando gets its own free Halloween event on Saturday, October 17.

The Halloweentown Collective Corner Market runs from 4 to 9 p.m. at Founder’s Square in Avalon Park.

Admission is free and the event is family friendly.

There will be local makers, artists, small businesses, food vendors, Halloweentown-inspired photo opportunities and music.

Then, after sunset, they are showing Halloweentown outdoors.

Pumpkin painting is available too, although that is an optional paid activity.

Costumes are encouraged.

When: Saturday, Oct. 17, 4 to 9 p.m.
Where: Founder’s Square, Avalon Park
Cost: FREE admission and movie

Bring chairs or a blanket and you have a pretty inexpensive family Saturday night.

6. See a Drone Show at Mount Dora’s Free Fall Festival, October 17

If you feel like taking a day trip instead, Mount Dora has something bigger happening the same evening.

The Mount Dora Fall Festival takes place Saturday, October 17, at Sunset Park.

The city lists the event from 5 to 9 p.m., with free admission.

Current plans include:

Live art and music.

A Parade of Scarecrows.

Live bands.

Children’s activities.

Food and drinks.

And a drone show.

That is a surprisingly strong lineup for a free community event.

And because it is in downtown Mount Dora, you can combine it with shops, restaurants and a walk around one of Central Florida’s better small-town downtowns.

When: Saturday, Oct. 17, 5 to 9 p.m.
Where: Sunset Park, downtown Mount Dora
Cost: FREE

7. Watch “Leaves” Fall in Celebration, October 16 and 17

Florida does not give us much in the way of autumn leaves.

Celebration has decided to solve the problem artificially.

Rocktoberfest returns to Celebration Town Center on Friday and Saturday, October 16 and 17.

Admission and parking are both free.

There will be live bands throughout both evenings, along with food, shops and activities around Market Street.

Then comes the fun part.

Celebration’s famous artificial leaves will fall over Market Street at 7, 8 and 9 p.m. each evening.

Is it actual fall weather?

No.

Is it Central Florida doing its best?

Absolutely.

When: Oct. 16 and 17
Where: Celebration Town Center
Cost: FREE admission and parking

This would make a good date-night option too. Walk around the lake, listen to music, have dinner and wait for the leaves.

8. Browse One of Florida’s Biggest Craft Fairs for Free, October 24 and 25

Mount Dora makes the list again later in the month.

The 41st Annual Mount Dora Craft Fair takes over downtown on Saturday and Sunday, October 24 and 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is free.

This is not a small neighborhood market.

The event brings hundreds of crafters into downtown and attracts extremely large crowds over the two-day weekend.

If you are looking for handmade gifts before the holidays, this is probably one of the best October events on the calendar.

Even if you do not buy anything, walking through downtown and browsing the booths costs nothing.

When: Oct. 24 and 25, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Downtown Mount Dora
Cost: FREE

Our advice is to go early. This event gets busy.

9. Take Your Dog to Barktoberfest at Lake Eola, October 25

Lake Nona

This one is particularly useful for pet owners.

Orange County Animal Services brings the 13th Annual Barktoberfest to Lake Eola on Sunday, October 25, from noon to 4 p.m.

The event brings together animal rescue groups, adoptable dogs and cats, pet-related businesses and local organizations.

Orange County Animal Services will also provide free vaccinations and microchipping for qualifying pets belonging to Orange County residents, with some exclusions.

Even if you are not looking to adopt, this could be a fun Sunday activity if you are an animal person.

And the regular Orlando Farmers Market is happening at Lake Eola the same day.

That means you can essentially combine two outings.

When: Sunday, Oct. 25, noon to 4 p.m.
Where: Lake Eola Park
Cost: FREE

Just be careful if you are the type of person who goes to “look at the dogs.”

You may return home with another family member.

10. Finish the Month With Free Halloween Fun in Sanford, October 31

Halloween itself brings one of the best truly free family events of the month.

The City of Sanford’s FANGtastic FEST takes place Saturday, October 31, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Jeff Triplett Community Center.

The city describes it simply as:

Free family fun.

Children ages 12 and younger can enjoy:

Costume contests.

Carnival games.

Inflatables.

And Halloween treats.

Costumes are encouraged.

For families trying to avoid expensive ticketed Halloween events, this is exactly the kind of community activity worth knowing about.

When: Saturday, Oct. 31, 2 to 5 p.m.
Where: Jeff Triplett Community Center, Sanford
Cost: FREE

Free Admission Does Not Mean You Have to Spend Nothing

One thing we have been trying to emphasize at Lifehappens2us is the difference between free admission and a completely free outing.

Many of these events have food trucks.

Restaurants nearby.

Vendors.

Crafts.

Shopping.

Optional activities.

You can certainly spend money.

But that is very different from being required to spend $150 before a family of four has even walked through the gate.

At a free event, you control the budget.

Bring water.

Eat before you leave.

Pack snacks when appropriate.

Give the kids a spending limit.

Or decide the entertainment itself is enough.

That flexibility matters, especially for larger families.

You Could Fill Almost Every October Weekend Without Paying Admission

That is really what surprised us when putting this list together.

October 5: Free Leu Gardens.

October 10: Orlando Latino Fest.

October 11: Viva Osceola.

October 16 and 17: Winter Garden Halloween projections, Mount Dora’s Fall Festival and Celebration Rocktoberfest.

October 17: Halloweentown in Avalon Park.

October 24 and 25: Mount Dora Craft Fair.

October 25: Barktoberfest.

October 31: FANGtastic FEST.

That is most of the month.

And none requires an admission ticket.

This Is the Orlando Locals Sometimes Miss

Living in Orlando can create a strange impression.

We are surrounded by some of the world’s most famous attractions, so it is easy to start believing that entertainment automatically means buying a ticket.

But the Orlando residents experience every weekend is much bigger than the theme parks.

It is Plant Street in Winter Garden.

A festival at Luminary Green.

A Saturday night in Avalon Park.

Lake Eola.

Kissimmee Lakefront.

Downtown Mount Dora.

Celebration.

Sanford.

Public gardens.

Community festivals.

Outdoor movies.

Markets.

Those places are not competing with Disney or Universal.

They are offering something different.

They are places you can decide to visit Saturday morning without planning six months in advance.

And frequently, you do not need to pay anything simply to walk in.

That is the Orlando we want to keep finding at Lifehappens2us.

Because sometimes the best answer to “What are we doing this weekend?” should not require checking the credit-card limit first.

Just a guy with a lot of thoughts on a lot different things. This site is where I can share some of those thoughts. I'm in Defense and Aerospace and we will leave it at that.
